AUGUST 24- 26, 2021 at the Omni Amelia Island Resort

This year, Appellate Practice Section members, again, can participate in the Florida Conference of District Court of Appeal Judges and 2021 Education Program. The conference is hosted by and presented to the appellate judges of Florida. Participants have the opportunity to learn from appellate judges and attorneys from across Florida and beyond as well as attend most of the educational program with the judges. This year’s event takes place at the beautiful Omni Amelia Island Resort and kicks off on the evening of Tuesday, August 24, 2021 with a Welcome Reception sponsored by the Appellate Practice Section. Wednesday boasts a full day of educational programming along with breakfast and lunch with the judges, and the event will conclude for Appellate Practice Section members on Thursday, August 26, 2021 with an afternoon meeting of the APS Executive Council preceded by breakfast, lunch, and a half day of CLE programming.

Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles T. Canady will provide the luncheon address focused on the state of the Florida judiciary and the operations of the Third Branch with comments from Florida Bar President Michael G. Tanner.

CLE Program and Accreditation

Judge Scott Makar and his DCA Conference Education Committee have put together an impressive educational program. Included are a presentation on the role of state courts and state constitutions in the development of American Constitutional Law by the Honorable Jeffrey S. Sutton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; presentations by criminal law and Fourth Amendment scholars, Professor Wayne Logan of Florida State University College of Law and Professor Christopher Slobogin of Vanderbilt Law School; two panel discussions, one with the newest Florida Supreme Court Justices and the other with the five new DCA Chief Judges, as well as other timely presentations on topics such as legal writing for the rewired brain and a presentation by 2013 Pulitzer Prize-Winning author, Gilbert King, on his newest book, Beneath a Ruthless Sun.
